The 2023 Climate Tech Exchange will highlight industry engagement opportunities and climate technology in Maryland.

Hosted by the Maryland Energy Innovation Accelerator (MEIA) and the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), the afternoon includes moderated conversations with industry leaders, a pitch showcase from three Maryland startups, and networking happy hour with startup founders.

Free to attend, with advance registration, this is a special pre-conference program of the 2023 Maryland Clean Energy Summit, being held on Tuesday, October 17, at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center.

Ellen Williams is a Distinguished University Professor and the Director of the Earth Systems Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) at the University of Maryland.  She has been a member of the University of Maryland faculty since 1981, with a break in which she took a leave of absence from the University to work in industry and then in government from 2010-2017.  Before returning to the University in January of 2017, she served as the Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency, ARPA-E, which advances high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment. 

Prior to Senate confirmation for her role in ARPA-E, Dr. Williams had been the Chief Scientist at BP (2010-2014), and a Distinguished University Professor in the Institute of Physical Science and Technology and the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland.  At Maryland she established an internationally recognized research program in experimental surface science, exploring fundamental issues in statistical mechanics and nanotechnology. She founded and then led the University’s interdisciplinary Materials Research Science and Engineering Center from 1996 through 2009.  Since returning to campus in 2017, she has worked with colleagues in the College of Engineering and the School of Public Policy to advance technical innovation in the development use of clean energy.  At ESSIC, she is responsible for a collaborative (NASA, NOAA and UMD) program of research on the analysis and integration of data from earth-observing satellites, with application of the results to forecast changes in the global environment and associated regional implications.   

Dr. Williams is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a foreign member of the Royal Society (London), and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  She has a distinguished history of professional service, including chairing the development of the NAS report on Technical Issues for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and extensive work in providing technical advice to the U.S. government related to national security.

Professor Bing Hu is Professor of Materials Science Engineering at UMD-College Park. Dr Hu’s research focuses on batteries, supercapacitors for various applications, energy conversion, solar fuel, transparent electrodes, light-trapping and wearable devices. Professor Hu is well known for his creation of flexible electronic materials and devices, such as transparent "nanopaper," nanotube ink, energy textiles, and tiny, printed antennae.

Dr. Eric D Wachsman, Director of the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute, is a Distinguished University Professor and the William L. Crentz Centennial Chair in Energy Research with appointments in both the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Maryland. He is Past President of The Electrochemical Society (ECS) and Editor-in-Chief of Ionics; a Fellow of both ECS and the American Ceramic Society; elected fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and member of the World Academy of Ceramics; the recipient of the 2017 Carl Wagner Award; the 2014 Sir William Grove Award; the 2014 Pfeil Award; the Outstanding Invention of 2013 award from the University of Maryland Office of Technology Licensing; the 2012 Fuel Cell Seminar Award; and the 2012 HTM Outstanding Achievement Award from ECS. His research is focused on solid ion-conducting materials and electrocatalysts, and includes the development of solid-state batteries, solid oxide fuel cells, ion-transport membrane reactors, and solid-state gas sensors. He has more than 280 publications and 40 patents/patent applications on ionic and electronic transport in materials, and their catalytic properties, and device performance, and to date four companies have been founded based on these technologies.

Dr. Chao Wang is Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Wang's research focuses on carbon dioxide capture and conversion, electrochemical energy conversion and storage, and heterogeneous catalysis for green chemical engineering. Dr. Wang is Chief Technology Officer of EDAC Labs. His direct air capture of CO2 approach is based on electrochemical systems designed to operate under ambient conditions and is fully compatible with renewable electricity.

Mike Ravenscroft is the Managing Director of the University System of Maryland (USM) Momentum Fund, a $16M seed stage venture fund that invests in startups affiliated with USM member institutions. Mike currently serves on the Executive Committee for the Maryland Launch Fund, a pre-seed funding program serving USM-affiliated startups, and on the Advisory Board of the Chesapeake Bay Seed Capital Fund. Prior to joining the Momentum Fund, Mike served on investment teams at Virginia Venture Partners, Dreamit Ventures, and C5 Capital, and he previously ran accelerator programs focused on cybersecurity, smart infrastructure, and social impact technology ventures. He holds an MBA from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a BA from the University of Michigan.
